Plug-in (110V) chargers give the steadiest power where an outlet is close. Battery chargers suit fences away from power. Solar chargers keep a battery topped up for remote pasture and shorter fences.
What do the mile ratings mean?
The distance of single, clean wire the charger can power under ideal conditions. Real fences with weeds, several strands or poor grounding need a charger rated well past their length.
What is a joule rating?
The energy in each pulse. More joules push through weeds and long runs better. The American Farm Works 15 joule and Power Wizard 9 joule are the strongest on this site.
How many ground rods do I need?
Follow the charger maker’s instructions. Most chargers need at least three ground rods spaced apart, and bigger chargers need more. Poor grounding is the most common cause of a weak fence.
What is a dual power charger?
A charger that runs on 110V AC or a 12V battery, such as the Patriot P5, P10, P20 and P30, so one charger can move between a barn and a remote pasture.
What charger do I need for cattle?
