Self-Catch vs Manual Headgates
Self-catch (automatic)
The animal pushes the gate closed as it walks through. One person can work cattle alone. The catch point has to be set for the animal size, and calves can slip through a gate set for cows.
Manual
You close the gate with a lever as the animal reaches it. Takes timing but works on mixed sizes and horned cattle. Cheaper on some brands, the same price on others.
Switchable
The Priefert HG91 and Tarter Series 3 work either way. The HG91 at $1,249.99 is the most sold headgate in this range for that reason.

Headgate Types by Design
Scissor-stanchion
Two curved bars close around the neck from both sides. Holds well, but can pinch a wide neck. Most self-catch gates use this design.
Straight-bar
Straight vertical bars close in parallel. Kinder on the neck, less grip on a head-tossing animal. Common on manual gates.
Positive-control
Locks at a fixed width with a ratchet. Found on Arrowquip’s Arrowlock and Behlen’s Pos-o-lock. Holds bulls without relying on the animal’s push.

How much does a cattle headgate cost?
$1,000 to $2,500 new. The Tarter S3 auto is $999.99 and the Pearson G3105 is $2,500. Hydraulic headgates run about $6,000.
Is a self-catch headgate worth more than a manual one?
Prices overlap. The Behlen self-catch is $80 more than the manual. The Priefert HG91 does both for $1,249.99.
Can I use a headgate without a chute?
Yes, bolted to the end of an alley or a panel run. It works for vaccinating quiet cattle. It does not hold an animal still for hoof work or preg checking the way a squeeze does.
Which headgate fits my chute?
Most brands size the headgate to their own chute frame. Buying the same brand avoids drilling. Priefert’s HG91 also ships on its S0191 and S04 chutes.
