Why it matters

Fence Charger Power Sources: Why It Matters

Location

A plug-in needs an outlet near the fence. Battery and solar go anywhere.

Strength

Plug-in chargers deliver the most output per dollar, which matters on long or weedy fences.

Upkeep

Batteries need charging or swapping. Solar panels need sun and a clean face.

The details

Fence Charger Power Sources: The Details

A fence charger, also called an energizer, turns power into short high-voltage pulses on the wire. Where that power comes from sets where you can put the fence and how strong it can be.

Plug-in chargers run on a 110V outlet. Battery chargers run on a 12V battery. Solar chargers use a panel to keep a battery charged. Some models run on either AC or battery.

Questions

Fence Charger Power Sources: Questions

Is a plug-in or solar fence charger better?

Plug-in chargers are stronger and cheaper for the output. Solar chargers win where there is no power. Pick by where the fence is.

How long does a battery fence charger last?

It depends on the charger’s draw and the battery size. Many owners swap or recharge every few weeks. Check the maker’s run time.

Do solar fence chargers work in winter?

Yes, but short days and cloudy weeks can drain the battery. Size the panel and battery for your winter sun.

Can I run a fence charger off a car battery?

A deep-cycle battery is the better choice. Car batteries are built for short bursts and wear out fast when drained.

What does AC/DC fence charger mean?

It runs on 110V AC from an outlet or on a 12V DC battery. Patriot’s P5, P10, P20 and P30 do both.

Do I need a special battery for a solar charger?

Most solar chargers ship with a battery or name the one to use. Replace it with the same type.

Is a plug-in charger safe near the barn?

Mount it in a dry spot, protect it from lightning with a diverter, and follow the maker’s grounding instructions.

Why is my solar charger weak?

A low battery, a dirty panel or poor grounding are the usual causes. Test the fence with a voltmeter.
