A joule is a measure of energy. On a fence charger it is the energy in each pulse sent down the wire.
More joules means the pulse can push through weeds, long runs and several strands and still deliver a sharp shock. Output joules are what reach the fence; stored joules are higher and less useful for comparing.

How many joules does a fence charger need?
It depends on fence length, strands and weeds. Short clean fences run fine under 1 joule; long or weedy fences want several joules.
What is the difference between output and stored joules?
Stored joules are what the charger holds; output joules are what reaches the fence. Compare output joules.
Is a higher joule charger dangerous?
Chargers are built to deliver a short, safe pulse. Follow the maker’s safety guidance and never use a charger not made for fencing.
Do more joules mean more miles?
Generally, yes. More energy per pulse carries farther and through more vegetation.

Some makers lead with miles or acres. Where joules are missing, compare mile ratings from the same maker.
How many joules for cattle?
Cattle are easier to hold than goats or horses on a fence, but long pastures and weeds still call for more joules. Test voltage at the far end.
Does grounding affect joules?
A charger cannot deliver its output without good grounding. Weak grounding wastes joules.
What is a low impedance fence charger?
A charger designed to keep output up when weeds touch the wire. Most modern chargers here are low impedance.
