The mile rating is how much single-strand fence a charger can power in ideal conditions: clean wire, no weeds, good ground.
Real fences have several strands, weeds touching the wire and imperfect ground. Each of those drains power, so the rating is a ceiling, not a target.

How many miles of fence charger do I need?
Add up every strand, then buy a charger rated well past that. Weeds and poor ground cut real distance a lot.
Are fence charger mile ratings accurate?
They reflect ideal conditions with one clean strand. Treat them as a maximum.
Miles or joules, which matters more?
Joules tell you the power behind each pulse, which is what pushes through weeds. Miles are easier to read but less telling.
How do I figure total fence length?
Multiply the distance around the pasture by the number of hot strands.
What does the acre rating mean?
Some makers also list acres, based on a square pasture. Patriot lists both.
Can a charger be too strong for a short fence?
A big charger on a short fence is fine for cattle. Follow the maker’s safety guidance.
Why does my fence lose voltage at the far end?
Long runs, weeds, poor splices and weak grounding all drop voltage. Check each with a fence tester.
What voltage should a cattle fence hold?
Many extension services suggest keeping at least 2,000 to 3,000 volts on the wire for cattle. Test it with a fence voltmeter.
