Why it matters

Bale Spear Mounts: Why It Matters

Machine fit

The mount must match your skid steer plate, hitch category or bucket. Check before buying.

Capacity

Round bales commonly weigh 800 to 1,500 lb. Buy a spear rated above your heaviest bale.

Spear length

Longer spears reach deeper into big bales and hold them more securely.

The details

Bale Spear Mounts: The Details

A bale spear is a long tapered steel spike that slides into a round bale so you can lift and carry it. Most frames add two short stabilizer spears so the bale cannot spin.

The mount decides which machine the spear fits. Skid steer spears use the universal quick attach plate. 3-point spears hang on a tractor hitch. Bucket spears clamp or bolt to a loader bucket, and weld-in sleeves take replacement spears.

Questions

Bale Spear Mounts: Questions

Can I use a skid steer bale spear on a tractor?

Yes, if the tractor loader has a universal skid steer quick attach plate. Otherwise you need an adapter or a different mount.

How much does a round bale weigh?

Roughly 800 to 1,500 lb for common sizes, more if the hay is wet. Check the spear’s rated capacity against your bales.

What are stabilizer spears for?

The short spears beside the main spear stop the bale from spinning while you carry it.

What is a Conus spear?

Conus 1 and Conus 2 are common thread and sleeve standards that let you replace a spear without welding.

Can I carry two bales at once?

Use a frame and machine rated for the combined weight, such as a 3-point spear on the back and a loader spear on the front.
