Joules
The number that matters
Joules measure the energy in each pulse. More joules push through weeds and wet grass touching the wire. For cattle, about 1 joule per 6 miles of wire is a common rule of thumb.
Miles
Read mile ratings with care
Mile ratings assume one clean wire. Three strands around 20 acres can be 3 miles of wire or more. Buy a charger rated for at least twice the wire you run.
Power
AC, battery or solar
Plug-in chargers cost the least per mile. Battery chargers need a charged 12V battery every few weeks. Solar chargers cost the most but run on their own.

How much does an electric fence charger cost?
A plug-in charger costs $35 for 2 miles of fence to about $450 for 200 miles or more. Battery chargers run $70 to $180 and solar chargers $100 to $970.
What size fence charger do I need for cattle?
Count every strand of wire, then buy a charger rated for at least twice that distance. For cattle, a charger with 1 joule or more handles most small pastures.
Is a solar fence charger worth it?
Where there is no outlet, yes. A solar charger costs more up front but needs no battery swaps. The Gallagher S30 is $339.99 and the Patriot SolarGuard 80 is $149.99 to $179.99.
Why does my fence charger lose power?
Weeds and grass touching the wire drain each pulse, and a poor ground rod setup weakens it. Most chargers need at least three ground rods, 10 feet apart.
