Why it matters

Hydraulic Chute Power Options: Why It Matters

Power at the pens

An electric unit needs the right voltage run to the pens. Check before you order, not after.

Total price

A power pack sold separately can add thousands to the listed chute price.

Noise and cattle

Electric motors run quieter than gas engines, which keeps cattle calmer in the chute.

The details

Hydraulic Chute Power Options: The Details

A hydraulic chute uses a pump to move the headgate, squeeze and tailgate. That pump needs a power source: an electric motor, a gas engine, or the hydraulics on a tractor.

The power spec tells you what you need at the working pens. It is also where a lot of surprise cost hides, because some chutes list the power unit as an add-on.

Questions

Hydraulic Chute Power Options: Questions

What power does a hydraulic squeeze chute need?

Most run from a 220V electric motor, a gas engine, or tractor hydraulics. The listing on each model page says which, and some let you choose.

Can a hydraulic chute run on 110V?

The chutes on this site list 220V, gas or tractor power. A standard 110V outlet will not run them.

What is three-phase power?

A type of electric service used by factories and some large farms. Most homes and farms have single-phase. A three-phase chute motor needs three-phase service or a phase converter.

Is gas or electric better for a hydraulic chute?

Electric is quieter and needs less upkeep where power is available. Gas works anywhere and suits pens with no electric service.

Can I run a chute off my tractor?

Some chutes, such as the Arrowquip 1070, offer a tractor hydraulics option. You need a tractor with rear remotes and enough flow.

Why is the power unit sold separately?

Makers price the power pack apart so buyers can pick the motor or engine they need. Add it to the chute price when you compare.

How much horsepower does a chute pump need?

The listings here run from 5 hp electric to 7.5 hp power packs. Follow the maker’s spec for your model.

Does a hydraulic chute work in winter?

Yes, but cold thickens hydraulic oil. Makers recommend the right oil grade for your climate and letting the pump warm up.
