Big cattle
A long cow or bull in a short chute leaves the hindquarters outside the tailgate.
Small cattle
Calves in a long chute have room to turn or back up, so a shorter chute or a tailgate stop helps.
Moving it
Longer chutes weigh more and are harder to move between pens.

Squeeze Chute Length: The Details
Length is the inside distance from the tailgate to the headgate. It decides how much of the animal fits inside the squeeze before the tailgate closes.
Makers measure differently. Some give inside length, some overall. Compare the number the same way across models and ask the dealer when a listing is unclear.

How long should a squeeze chute be?
Long enough to hold your biggest animals fully inside with the tailgate closed. Most chutes here run 87 to 145 inches.
Is inside or overall length listed?
It varies by maker. Tarter lists inside length on the Series 3. Check each listing and compare like with like.
What chute length do I need for bulls?
Look over 105 inches or at an extended model. The W-W Bull Master and Arrowquip 8800 are built for bigger cattle.
Can I work calves in a long chute?
Yes, with care. Calves can turn around in a long chute. A calf table or a shorter chute is easier for small calves.
Does a longer chute cost more?
Usually, because it uses more steel. Price also depends on headgate, floor and extras, so compare the full listing.
What is an extended chute?
A longer version of a standard model, sold for big-framed cattle. Silencer sells Ranch and Ranch Extended versions.
Does chute width matter too?
Yes. Adjustable width or a squeeze that closes narrow helps hold smaller cattle still. Wide-body models suit big cows.
How do I measure my cattle for a chute?
Measure a large cow from the point of the shoulder to the pin bone and add room for her head and the tailgate.
